Assam Council of Medical Registration

The Assam Council of Medical Registration was established in 1916 with the publication of ‘The Assam Medical Act, 1916’ in the Assam Gazette on 24th May, 1916 in order to provide registration of Medical Practitioners of Assam which included the whole of Assam and Khasi & Jaintia Hill Districts (presently Meghalaya state of Indian Union).

The Council was reconstituted by the Government of Assam through ‘The Assam Medical Council Act, 1999’ and subsequently amended in 2014 by ‘The Assam Medical Council (Amendment) Act, 2014’.

Functions of the Council:

  • Registration of Medical Practitioners practicing Allopathic Medicine within the state of Assam and Meghalaya and maintaining a Register thereon.
  • Accept complaints against Registered Medical Practitioners (RMPs) from public/statutory bodies, enquire into these for any lapse on the part of the RMPs and take appropriate actions.
  • Cancel registration of a Registered Medical Practitioner (RMP) on finding guilty of Medical Negligence or any other clause as mentioned in the Act.
  • Issue No objection certificate for reciprocal registration in other State Medical Council (SMC) / National Medical Commission (NMC).
  • Recommend application to National Medical Commission for issuance of Good Standing Certificate.
  • Issue Credit Points in Continuing Medical Education (CME) / Continuing Professional Development (CPD) as per guidelines published by MCI/NMC from time to time.
